Route

This trail leaves from the Base de Vigilância Catuçaba (surveillance base), heading to the Núcleo Cunha. The route is approximately 20 km long, passing through sections of secondary forest and open areas; the scenery is strongly marked by mountains and forests, and the terrain is very steep, with descents and climbs. When the crossing of the Rio do Palmital cannot be made over the rocks, it must be made through the water. Just ahead, you will face a steep 400 m climb in the open until you reach the crest of the watershed divide between the Rio Palmital and the Paraibuna. From this point, you walk inside the forest to the bridge over the Rio Paraibuna at the Núcleo Cunha. By this point you will have covered approximately 12 km; the route continues along a trail/road through the forest for 8 km, passing the Cachoeira da Pedra Chata and several water spouts. At the end are the stunning Cachoeira do Barracão and the visitor center of the Núcleo Cunha.
