Route

Day 1 - approximately 12 km. We climb about 5 km to the peak of the Serra da Careta (Morro do Chapéu). It looks like the hat in the book The Little Prince. This peak has a summit logbook. You don't need to carry your backpacking pack on the summit push. Right after, you pass the Morro do Cruzeiro and continue above the valley to the Rancho do Salvador campsite (at the base of the Pico do Chorão); on this same day it is recommended to summit the Chorão and watch the sunset; Day 2 - approximately 10 km. Departure from the campsite, passing beautiful views and waterfall crossings. At approximately 19 km you will find a house with a table near the park entrance; it is a camping area, but it is recommended that you keep going, cross the Cachoeira do Charco and set up camp above this waterfall. I took off my shoes and pants to cross, because the water comes up to the thighs (I am 1.68 m tall). Day 3 - approximately 14 km. This is the day you gain the most altitude, heading to the highest peak in the park, the Tamanduá Bandeira. You pass through the Santo Daime property area, where hikers are not welcome, so go through quickly. On this day we hike through many clearings with many signs of puma. Before the summit there is the last water point, at the Retiro dos Pedros camping area. Our group chose to refill water and camp on the summit of the Tamanduá Bandeira, which fits about 4 tents in a well-sheltered area (a small patch of forest). Day 4 - approximately 12 km. Start of the descent toward the Pico do Papagaio, passing the Santuário/ Pedra do Altar, camping areas and the Bosque do Silêncio. After summiting the Papagaio, the 7 km descent begins to Camping O Panorâmico, where a pickup should be waiting for you, or you may have booked lodging and meals at the campground.
