Description

The agrovillage of Macapazinho is a quilombola community located 15 km from the center of Castanhal, home to around 200 families. This peaceful, green-surrounded place is bathed by the waters of the Inhangapí River. Founded on November 15, 1894, the community preserves century-old traditions, history, and culture of quilombola descendants. In 2017, the community received the official title of Quilombola Community. Technicians from the Palmares Foundation certified this status after a detailed study that included the investigation of graves in local cemeteries, historical artifacts, and the self-declaration of the community itself. The colonization of Macapazinho began with the arrival of enslaved people fleeing plantations in the metropolitan region of Belém. These fugitives used the Guamá River as an escape route, descending its waters until they reached the Inhangapi River and its tributaries. Macapazinho is located on the banks of the Apeú River, a tributary of the Inhangapi River, which in turn is a tributary of the Guamá River. In this way, the fugitives settled in the area. Macapazinho is also known for the faith and religious traditions of its residents, who celebrate two major festivals: the Círio de Macapazinho and the Festa do Divino. The Festa do Divino is an ancestral tradition, while the Círio was introduced by someone from outside the community. These festivities reflect the deep religiosity and cultural cohesion of the inhabitants. The community keeps its quilombola roots alive through cultural practices and the preservation of its stories.
