Reserva Extrativista Marinha de Gurupi-Piriá

Description
The Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX) Gurupi-Piriá is located in the municipality of Viseu and spans approximately 74,000 hectares. As the last municipality on the Pará coast, it has challenging access, preserving untouched landscapes of great scenic beauty and significant potential for the development of ecotourism, community tourism, and experiential tourism. Notable attractions include the beaches of Apeú-Salvador, Gurupizinho, Taperebateua, and Itacupim, where visitors can experience staying in fishing huts, conversing with local fishermen, and enjoying an "avuado" (grilled fish) on the beach. Another highlight is the Pedra Grande do Gurupi, a small rocky island that stands out from the surrounding islets and sandbanks due to its dark color. The rock formation, with a circumference of 160 meters, is woven into the imagination of Viseu's fishermen through various legends, myths, and fantasies. According to local lore, the rock used to move closer to the mainland, allowing people to reach it on foot, accompanied by a booming echo that lasted for hours before everything returned to normal. Perhaps the most famous attraction in the municipality is the Serra do Piriá, a natural viewpoint from which one can observe the vastness of the mangroves along the Piriá River and enjoy the best panoramic view of the coastline of both Pará and Maranhão states. This point also marks the end (or beginning) of the Atlantic Amazon Trail.
