Description

Reserva Ecológica Estadual da Juatinga is located in the municipality of Paraty, on the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and covers an extensive coastal area marked by mountainous terrain, dense forests, and secluded beaches. Created in 1992, the reserve stands out for its well-preserved landscape, with beaches such as Praia do Sono, Ponta Negra, and Martim de Sá, reached mainly by trail or by boat. This contributes to a more rustic, ecotourism-oriented style of visitation. In addition to its natural assets, the reserve is home to traditional caiçara communities, whose culture and ways of life are closely tied to the territory, giving the area great sociocultural significance. From an ecological standpoint, the reserve protects important remnants of dense ombrophilous forest, restingas (coastal sandy-plain vegetation), and rocky shores. The combination of relative isolation, diversity of environments, and low urbanization makes it one of the best-preserved stretches of the Rio de Janeiro state coastline. Finally, Reserva da Juatinga plays a strategic role in conserving regional biodiversity and in managing public use, balancing environmental protection with activities such as community-based tourism and recreation in contact with nature. Notice: to visit Cachoeira do Saco Bravo, in Ponta Negra, you must hire a tour guide or a visitor guide accredited by Inea, in accordance with Inea Resolution No. 192 of December 18, 2019.
