Reserva Biológica da Praia do Sul

Description
The Biological Reserve (Rebio) of Praia do Sul, created in 1981 and managed by the State Institute of the Environment of Rio de Janeiro - Inea RJ, is one of the most preserved and restricted areas in the state. Located on the ocean side of Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis, it is a true "sanctuary" of biodiversity. Situated between Ponta da Parnaioca and Ponta dos Dragos, it encompasses the beaches of the South and East and houses Atlantic Forest, mangroves, restingas, rocky shores, and lagoons, which are important nurseries for various marine species and have brackish waters. The area is rich in biodiversity, with the presence of otters, yellow-bellied caimans, various fish, shrimp, crabs, and birds. The flora includes restingas with ferns, bromeliads, and orchids. In addition to nature, the reserve holds historical treasures: Sambaquis. There are several archaeological sites (mounds of shells and organic remains) left by prehistoric populations that inhabited the island thousands of years ago. Unlike a National Park (where tourism is allowed), the Biological Reserve is a category of strict Integral Protection (SNUC). PUBLIC VISITATION IS PROHIBITED, with access allowed only for educational purposes (by appointment) or documented scientific research. ATTENTION: Tourism, camping, fishing, removal of vegetation, or any human intervention that is not environmental management or research are prohibited activities in this Conservation Unit. Praia do Sul and Praia do Leste are contiguous beaches, separated only by a small river/canal mouth that connects Lagoa do Leste to the sea. Both are entirely within the limits of the conservation unit. The area encompassing Praia do Leste and Praia do Sul protects a complex ecosystem of restingas, mangroves, and lagoons (such as Lagoa do Leste), making it one of the most untouched locations along the entire coastline of Rio de Janeiro. Praia do Sul is about 3.6 to 4 km long, and Praia do Leste is 2 to 2.4 km long. ATTENTION: Monitoring in the area is constant and conducted by Inea RJ park rangers. Unauthorized landings may result in heavy fines and seizure of vessels. The allowed limit for walking and boats ends at Praia de Parnaioca (on one side) or at Praia do Aventureiro (on the other).
