Description

Created in 1958 and covering more than 35,750 hectares, Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira - PETAR is located in the Vale do Ribeira, in the south of the State of São Paulo, and is contiguous with Parque Estadual de Intervales. In addition to harboring an important remnant of Atlantic Forest, PETAR has more than 400 caves of stunning beauty, with unique underground landscapes, a wide morphological variety of speleothems, and paleontological sites. PETAR is home to many plant species typical of the Atlantic Forest, such as canela, cedar, and juçara palm; and to wildlife such as the jaguar and the muriqui, considered the largest primate in the Americas. The park is divided into eight administrative management units (Núcleos), four of which are open to visitors: Santana, Ouro Grosso, Caboclos, and Casa de Pedra.
