Parque Nacional Guaricana
Description
The Parque Nacional Guaricana safeguards a valuable socio-environmental wealth through its biodiversity, ecosystem services, history, and local and regional cultures. It is the largest national park in the Grande Reserva da Mata Atlântica in Brazil, one of the world's most biologically diverse hotspots, with habitats extensive and healthy enough, and with minimal human interference, to shelter, free and wild, the last individuals of Brazil's surviving megafauna, such as large herbivores and apex predator cats like the jaguar. Created on October 13, 2014, the Parque Nacional de Guaricana covers part of the municipalities of São José dos Pinhais, Guaratuba and Morretes, in the Serra do Mar of Paraná. The Park's objectives, according to Law No. 9.985/2000 (SNUC) and its creation Decree, are: - To preserve natural ecosystems of great ecological relevance and scenic beauty, especially remnants of Dense and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest; - To protect fauna, flora, water resources, geological and geomorphological features and associated natural landscapes; - To develop environmental education and interpretation, recreation in contact with nature and ecotourism activities; - To enable and encourage scientific research. The Parque Nacional Guaricana offers the potential to reconcile biodiversity conservation with different socio-environmental practices, such as scientific research and innovation, environmental education, tourism and recreation, for different audiences such as researchers, schools, local residents, tourists, volunteers, and public and private institutions. The Parque Nacional Guaricana is managed by ICMBio, through the Núcleo de Gestão Integrada em Curitiba (NGI ICMBio Curitiba), an agency linked to the Ministério do Meio Ambiente. The park's management is also supported by society through the Advisory Council and public-private institutional partnerships, in carrying out programs and projects aimed at achieving its objectives and regional sustainability.
