Description
Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, the state's postcard image, protects the region's ecosystems of lagoons, oases and dunes. For visits by motor vehicle, hiring an accredited guide is mandatory. The park contains about 36,000 lagoons, as well as traditional communities located in the so-called "primitive area", which can be reached on foot as long as you are accompanied by a local guide. There are full lagoons all year round. However, the water is at its peak between July and August. At this time of year, the flow of tourists is much higher, which is good from a financial point of view, as the low number of visitors at other times tends to raise each person's share of transportation costs.
