Parque Nacional do Descobrimento is part of the Costa do Descobrimento Natural World Heritage Site, an area considered a Biosphere Reserve. Its basic objective is to preserve natural ecosystems of great ecological importance and scenic beauty, making it possible to carry out scientific research and to develop environmental education activities, recreation in contact with nature and ecotourism. It is a place of trails and of Atlantic Forest preservation. Located in the far south of Bahia, it lies 800 kilometers from the state capital, Salvador. The area lies in the municipality of Prado and protects part of the watersheds of the Cahy, Peixe, Imbassuaba, Japara Grande and Japara Mirim rivers. This protected area seeks to protect and preserve the last remnants of the Atlantic Forest's coastal tableland forest.
