Parque Nacional do Alto do Cariri
Description
Before being established as a federal protected area, Alto Cariri was a state park and already aimed to protect plant and animal species, springs and watercourses, as well as to boost the local economy through the development of ecotourism, scientific tourism and adventure tourism in a way compatible with the protection of biodiversity. Covering 148,000 square meters, the park's main objective is to preserve the mountain complex formed by continuous remnants of Atlantic Forest and to ensure the survival of populations of mammal and bird species threatened with extinction, especially the northern muriqui. The region holds an important remnant of Atlantic Forest in southern Bahia and plays a key role in preserving threatened species such as the muriqui, or woolly spider monkey, the largest primate in the Americas – which is on the national list of Brazilian fauna species threatened with extinction issued by the Ministério do Meio Ambiente (Ministry of the Environment).
