Description

This protected area lies along the easternmost section of the border between the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, and its purpose is to value and conserve the geological and geomorphological features that form the aparados (cliff edges) of the Serra Geral – the result of the great basalt flows in southern Brazil 132 million years ago. The park preserves the canyon landscape of the region, a significant sample of the flora, as well as ecological corridors, and contributes to the conservation of water resources and of the Mampituba, Araranguá and Tramandaí river basins.
