Description

The Núcleo Bertioga (Bertioga unit) of Parque Estadual Serra do Mar was created in 2010 as part of the PESM expansion project and covers parts of the municipalities of Bertioga and Biritiba Mirim. Its territory was previously part of the Núcleo Itutinga-Pilões, forming a large ecological corridor whose size made management difficult. PESM-NB is considered one of the best-preserved coastal stretches of Atlantic Forest, ensuring the maintenance of a variety of ecosystem services and protecting important water-producing areas that supply the Baixada Santista region. Together with the adjacent Parque Estadual Restinga de Bertioga, it forms an ecological and biodiversity corridor between terrestrial and marine-coastal environments.
