Description
Saíra-Apunhalada State Park is a Strict Protection Conservation Unit located in the municipality of Vargem Alta and covers an area of 234,667 hectares. It was created to protect one of the most critical cases of biodiversity conservation in Brazil: the saíra-apunhalada (Nemosia rourei), an endemic species of Espírito Santo and considered one of the most endangered birds in the world. The main remaining population of the species is associated with the region of Mata de Caetés, an important forest corridor that encompasses areas of the municipalities of Castelo, Domingos Martins, and Vargem Alta. In addition to the saíra-apunhalada, the area hosts a high biological diversity, including endangered species such as the abelha-uruçu-capixaba, the bagre-de-caetés, the sapinho-de-ouro, the cágado-da-serra, and birds like the gavião-pombo-pequeno, the apuim-de-costas-pretas, the araponga, and the papo-branco.
