Description

The Parque Estadual Juquery - PEJY is a strictly protected area covering 2,058.09 hectares, and it shelters one of the last preserved remnants of the Cerrado Biome in the São Paulo metropolitan region. The place is named after a plant that Indigenous peoples found along riverbanks and called Yu-kery, known as Dorme Dorme or Dorme Maria (sensitive plant). When touched, the Yu-kery closes its leaves, opening them again after a while. The Park's symbols are the red-legged seriema, a typical Cerrado bird that is easy to spot at PEJY, and the Ovo do Pato, its highest point at 942 m above sea level.
