Description
Monte Alegre State Park (PEMA) is a Fully Protected Conservation Unit, of great importance due to its peculiar ecosystem and significant scenic beauty. Established by State Law No. 6,412, on November 9, 2001, its boundaries were rectified by State Law No. 7,692, on January 3, 2013. PEMA is located in the Municipality of Monte Alegre, in the northwestern portion of the State of Pará, in the Mesoregion of Baixo Amazonas, Microregion of Santarém, and has a total area of 36.78 km² (3,678 ha). The Park features a complex of mountains (Serra da Lua and Serra do Ererê), valleys, caves (Gruta do Pilão and Gruta Itatupaoca), as well as various archaeological sites with rock paintings (the park contains the oldest archaeological site in South American Amazon with rock paintings dated at 11,200 years B.P.). The Unit has some particularities: a geomorphological structure (Dome of Monte Alegre characterized by a set of rugged terrain); its vegetation is predominantly represented by the Cerrado or Savanna formation; sandy soil (closely linked to the influences of the rocks) and a diverse fauna with the presence of endemic species, such as Aratinga maculata. According to the law establishing the Park, its objective is to protect the encompassed natural ecosystems against any alterations that may distort them, reconciling the full protection of natural, cultural, historical resources and scenic beauties with uses for scientific, cultural, educational, recreational, and ecotourism purposes. The main activities available in the Park include visiting archaeological sites (archaeotourism), which includes climbing at some points of interest, trails, cave visits (spelunking), environmental education, sports (mountain biking), and scientific research.
