Description
Created in 1991, the Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca (PESET) is the first protected area in the State of Rio de Janeiro to have emerged from the mobilization of environmental and community movements. It is located in the municipalities of Niterói and Maricá. Covering about 3,500 hectares, the region has been of great historical significance since the 19th century. Well-known naturalists passed through the area that is now home to the park. One of them was the German prince and naturalist Maximiliano de Wied-Neuwied, who expressed his enchantment in the book “Viagem ao Brasil.” Another traveler who crossed those forests, in 1832, was the English naturalist Charles Darwin.
