MONA Estadual Mantiqueira Paulista
Description
Monumento Natural Estadual Mantiqueira Paulista (MONAMP), a strictly protected area, was created by State Decree No. 65.457/2021 on January 5, 2021, with an area of 10,363.16 ha (ten thousand three hundred sixty-three hectares and sixteen ares), located in the municipalities of Cruzeiro and Piquete, in the Vale do Paraíba, SP. Created with the support and encouragement of local private landowners, the protected area aims to conserve the biodiversity of the São Paulo corridor of the Serra da Mantiqueira. Mona Mantiqueira seeks to protect water resources and the local landscape, for its significance as a cultural and historical landmark, as well as geological and geomorphological features, and to further ecological restoration, environmental education, sustainable development, and regional social inclusion, with a view to participatory management mechanisms. Finally, it aims to organize tourist visits and sports use of the rock complex in order to ensure the safety of the natural environment and its users, as well as to prevent and fight fires and environmental degradation.
