MONA da Pedra do Baú

Description
The MONA Pedra do Baú lies within the Atlantic Forest, with high-altitude vegetation and great faunal diversity. The protected area is made up of plant formations belonging to the Atlantic Forest, such as High-Altitude Grasslands (upper montane herbaceous/shrub refugium), Araucaria Forest (Mixed Ombrophilous Forest) and Cloud Forest (Upper Montane Dense Ombrophilous Forest). In addition, at lower elevations there is a transition between vegetation types (ecotone) from the Mixed Ombrophilous Forests to the Seasonal Semideciduous Forests. Inside the monument stands the famous Pedra do Baú, 1,195 meters high, the rock that gives the protected area its name. Amid the stunning landscape of the Serra da Mantiqueira, a group of rocks stands out imposingly in the municipality of São Bento do Sapucaí: the Pedra do Baú and its “sisters,” Bauzinho and Ana Chata. The rock group has at least 30 climbing routes, with varying levels of technical complexity and difficulty, as well as different lengths and heights. From the top of the rock, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Serra da Mantiqueira, in the area along the border between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. What is more, the rock itself is so prominent in the landscape that it can be seen from many places in the Vale do Paraíba, and it has even been used as a landmark for geographic navigation.
