Maciço da Serra Fina

Description
The Serra Fina massif, on the border of the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, became a major destination for mountaineers in the 2000s with the discovery that the Pico da Pedra da Mina (located in the RPPN Pedra da Mina), at 2,798 m, ranked fourth among the highest mountains in Brazil. Its natural beauty and challenging terrain have brought mountaineers from all over the country and the world to practice mountain sports. The Serra Fina trail complex has 3 main entrances that give access to its ridges. Starting with the Toca do Lobo entrance, located in Passa Quatro-MG, it is known as the starting point of the classic 4-day traverse and also gives access to Quartzito, Passo dos Anjos and Capim Amarelo. Continuing onward, it also reaches the ridges of Melano and Pedra da Mina. The Paiolinho entrance, also in Passa Quatro-MG, is the main and most direct access to Pedra da Mina, and this route is also used for the half traverse. The Nativa Serra Fina entrance is the starting point for Alto dos Ivos and Pico dos Três Estados, and it is also used to access reverse traverses and half traverses. On the classic traverse, it is the end point, where visitors can count on the infrastructure of a full mountain hut and wait for their transfer. The difficult access, through dense forests and sheer slopes, helped keep it unreachable for such a long time and made it hard to reach so many years after its “discovery.” Even after its altitude became known, it still remains preserved and conserved. With visitor access control, which began in 2022, the Serra Fina now has a management plan, as well as improvements and safety measures for its visitors. The entire Serra Fina Massif covers between 75 and 85 km², an average of 80 km².
