Description

The Jardim Botânico de Brasília (JBB) is a protected area under the Secretaria do Meio Ambiente e Proteção Animal do Distrito Federal (SEMA/DF), whose mission is to establish and maintain plant collections and to carry out research, environmental education and leisure geared toward biodiversity conservation. The JBB consists predominantly of Cerrado vegetation in excellent condition, which can be enjoyed on the interpretive trails open to the public. Because of this, it is known as the “Garden of the Cerrado.” The visitor area includes the Visitor Center, the Centro de Excelência do Cerrado, the Espaço Oribá/Picnic Area/Playground, the Orchid House, the Cactus House, the Library, the Permaculture area, the Amphitheater, the Interpretive Trails, the Alameda das Nações e dos Estados and the Theme Gardens. The Jardim Botânico de Brasília is a living museum with collections of Theme Gardens open to the public: the Jardim Evolutivo (Evolutionary Garden), the Jardim de Cheiros (Scent Garden), the Jardim Japonês (Japanese Garden) and the Jardim de Contemplação (Contemplation Garden). These spaces offer contact with the diversity of species found on the planet and help us understand how human societies relate to their plants and shape their landscapes. The JBB technical staff is made up of public servants who work to raise environmental awareness, producing and sharing knowledge about the Cerrado Biome and making society aware of the importance of its conservation. The Jardim Botânico de Brasília is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, including holidays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with entry allowed until 4:30 p.m. Free admission for pedestrians and cyclists between 7:30 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. Decree No. 36.866, of November 9, 2015, sets the admission fee and the exemptions. See: Art. 1 The admission price for visiting the Jardim Botânico de Brasília (JBB) is set at R$ 5 per person. The visitation fee must be paid in cash only. § 1 The following are exempt from paying admission upon presentation of an official identification document: I – children under 12 years of age; II – people with disabilities; III – people over 60 years of age. § 2 It is up to the Director of the Jardim Botânico de Brasília (JBB) to define, by means of a specific act, other cases of exemption from the admission fee. Trilha Mater This is the first trail of the Jardim Botânico de Brasília (JBB), paved and accessible to people with disabilities. It starts at the main gate and crosses several types of Cerrado vegetation (dense, typical and sparse), passing by the Visitor Center and the Amphitheater, and returns to the main gate through a gallery formed by dense Cerrado trees. The vegetation is extensively labeled with botanical identification, allowing self-guided visits. Trilha Ecológica Set in the Cerrado, this trail encourages visitors to interpret this rich Biome, inviting them to discover the complexity and grandeur of the plant diversity of Central Brazil. Along the 3.5 km route, visitors pass through various vegetation types, such as Cerrado sensu stricto, campo limpo (open grassland), campo sujo (shrub grassland) and gallery forest. Along the way comes a surprise: one of the springs of the Córrego Cabeça de Veado, an important source of Brasília's water supply. Its last stretch contains the Trilha da Fauna, ideal for learning about the characteristics of some Cerrado animals. With close attention and a bit of luck, you may spot an anteater, an armadillo or another representative of our fauna. This route is for pedestrians only. Cyclists must use the appropriate trails. Trilha Krahô Within the Trilha Ecológica, the route of this trail recognizes the importance of the Krahô people, our ancestral culture. Along it, amid the native vegetation, visitors can see species introduced on the advice of consultant Feliciano Krahô, who was hired by the project to design it. The Krahô people live in the northeast of the state of Tocantins, in the Terra Indígena Kraholândia, located in the municipalities of Goiatins and Itacajá. Their roots lie in the Cerrado Biome, which is why the Jardim Botânico de Brasília (JBB) chose to reproduce aspects of their cultural traditions on this trail.
