APA Tamoios

Description
The Tamoios Environmental Protection Area (APA) is the largest conservation unit in the region of Baía da Ilha Grande. Unlike the Rebio (Integral Protection), it is a Sustainable Use unit, which means its goal is to reconcile human occupation and tourism with nature preservation. Established by State Decree No. 9,452 in 1986, it encompasses almost the entire northern face (facing the continent) of Ilha Grande and more than 100 islands and islets in Baía da Ilha Grande, in the municipality of Angra dos Reis. The Tamoios APA acts as a kind of "buffer zone" and management area for regions that are not within the more restricted parks (such as the Ilha Grande State Park or the Rebio Praia do Sul). It covers areas of villages, settlements, and beaches where tourism and housing are permitted and sets the rules for construction, sanitation, the establishment of inns, and nautical activities, aiming to prevent the degradation that unregulated tourism could cause. The Tamoios APA includes the busiest and most well-known regions of Ilha Grande. If a beach has an inn or a tourist dock, it is almost certainly under the jurisdiction of the Tamoios APA (often overlapping with other zones). The main beaches and coves included or directly influenced by it are: Vila do Abraão, Enseada de Palmas, including Praia de Palmas and Praia do Pouso; Saco do Céu; Enseada de Araçatiba, including Praia Grande de Araçatiba and Araçatibinha; Praia de Provtetá; Enseada do Bananal and Sítio Forte; Praia da Feiticeira and Praia da Camiranga; Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde.
