APA da Região Metropolitana de Belém

Description
The conservation unit (UC) was established by the Government of the State of Pará through State Decree No. 1,551 on May 3, 1993, and is managed by the Institute for Forestry and Biodiversity Development of the State of Pará (Ideflor-bio). It encompasses an area of approximately 7,500 hectares located in the municipalities of Belém and Ananindeua, and its creation is closely tied to the conservation of the water sources that supply Belém, including the Água Preta and Bolonha lakes, among other objectives. The APA Belém also plays a crucial role in protecting another conservation unit, the Utinga Camillo Vianna State Park, serving as a buffer zone to mitigate environmental impacts that could affect the Utinga Park. Its vast territorial area has the potential to meet various socio-environmental needs such as local biodiversity preservation, degraded area restoration, provision of permeable soils, and the development of cultural, educational, tourism, recreational, and leisure activities for the population, as well as scientific research and other alternatives. From a tourism perspective, the APA Belém is an excellent destination for cycling tours, with a well-known meeting point for cyclists: the Lulu resort in the community of Navegantes, where visitors can enjoy community cuisine along the beautiful Rio Aurá. The APA’s varied vegetation types, including well-preserved forest fragments and more open areas with agricultural and pastoral activities, make it a prime location for birdwatching, with an estimated diversity of around 300 species. Additionally, it is important to note that the APA includes within its geographical boundaries the Historical Site of the Murutucu Mill, which preserves the ruins of the mill, a historic monument listed by IPHAN. The mill was founded in the second half of the 18th century for sugar production and experienced periods of significant economic prosperity. The site also holds historical importance as one of the encampments of the Cabanagem Movement.
