A little about the city

Itatiaia is a municipality located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, known for being home to one of the highest parts of the Serra da Mantiqueira and to the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, the first national park in Brazil. The Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is one of the main attractions of the region. Created in 1937, it is the first national park in Brazil and covers an area of more than 30,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest and high-altitude grasslands (campos de altitude). The park offers trails, waterfalls, lookouts, and a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The Pico das Agulhas Negras is the highest point in the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia and one of the highest peaks in Brazil, at about 2,792 meters above sea level. The climb to the peak is one of the most challenging trails in the region, but it offers spectacular views of the Serra da Mantiqueira and its surroundings. Beyond the national park, Itatiaia offers many options for adventure tourism, such as rappelling, climbing, mountaineering, trekking, mountain biking, and hang gliding. The region is known for its mountainous landscapes and its challenges for extreme sports enthusiasts. Itatiaia has several waterfalls and natural pools, ideal for refreshing swims and moments of relaxation amid nature. Some of the best-known waterfalls are the Cachoeira Poranga, the Cachoeira Itaporani, and the Cachoeira Véu de Noiva.
