Monte Roraima
Monte Roraima is located in South America, at the tri-border of Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana. It is a tepui, a type of table-shaped mountain very characteristic of the Guiana Highlands. Bounded by cliffs about 1,000 meters high, its plateau has an environment completely different from the tropical forest and savanna that stretch out at its foot. The high rainfall has led to the formation of pseudokarst and numerous caves, as well as to soil leaching. The flora has adapted to these climatic and geological conditions, and several species of carnivorous plants are found there – they obtain from captured insects the nutrients the soil lacks. The fauna is also marked by the presence of reptiles and amphibians. This environment is protected in Venezuelan territory by Parque Nacional Canaima and in Brazilian territory by Parque Nacional do Monte Roraima. Its highest point rises at the southern end, in the Venezuelan state of Bolívar, at 2,810 meters above sea level. The second-highest point, at 2,772 meters, is in the north of the plateau, in Guyanese territory, near the border marker between the three countries. In Brazil, at 2,734 meters above sea level, Monte Roraima is the eighth-highest point. The trail to Monte Roraima is hiked from the Venezuelan side, in a three-day experience of walking through breathtaking landscapes, crossing the Kukenan River and discovering the unique nature of this mountain. Its top holds surprises and incredible rock formations, such as El Foso, the Triple Point that separates Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela, the famous Jacuzzis - natural pools of clear, greenish water - a valley covered in crystals, and much more.
